POWER CATAMARANS

The power catamarans built by the Multihull Centre have been developed and designed as power boats and are not sailing cat hulls with large engines fitted.  They are built using high tech materials which gives a strong, light boat with a good power to weight ratio. This means that for a given speed, smaller engines are required and savings on fuel and running costs can be considerable.

Power catamarans are very fast, versatile and manoeuvrable.  They offer enormous stability, seaworthiness and a safe stable working area.  Large cockpits make the boats adaptable for many work demands. Ideal uses for Power catamarans are:

  • Dive Boats
  • Fishing Boats
  • Sport Fishing Boats
  • Trip Boats
  • Harbour Launch
  • Passenger Ferry
  • Customs/Police Launch
  • Leisure Cruiser

Very efficient hull shapes produce a clean comfortable motion and power is directed into moving the boat, not pushing water out of her way.  Photographs show that there is no wave interaction between the hulls and that there are two clean wakes, one from each hull.

Dive Twins is a 28ft Power catamaran fitted with twin 60hp engines, has a cruising speed of 15 knots and a top speed of 20 knots.

Twins 43 Power is a 43ft catamaran, she can comfortably cruise at 15 knots and has a top speed of over 20 knots, depending on choice of engines.

Schionning Designs Power cat range

The Prowler Cat, available between 7m and 17.7m.

All use a unique hull shape allowing very efficient hull speeds at high or low speeds, all this with a healthy payload on board. Because the hulls have a good beam to length ratio, the hulls end up slim and easily driven. This enables the boat to keep speeds relatively high in rough sea conditions and to travel in comfort. All the Prowler Cats have good bridgedeck clearance to eliminate slamming. Good looks combined with generous interior volume creates a very attractive proposition.

The boats are designed to be built with light.strong materials, such as DUFlex balsa sheets for the structure and DuFlex honeycomb for the interior. Due to the hull design and efficiency, less horsepower is required to drive these boats, one example is a Prowler 240 fitted with 2 x 56hp saildrive diesels, performance is impressive, cruising at 14 knots with motors running at 2600 revs, both engines were using 0.7litres of fuel per mile.
